Worst. Weekend. Ever.

Gray and I didn't get a chance to talk about it on this week's show so I just wanted to go on the record here that I have to disagree with the movie poster to the left in that this might be the worst week ever in terms of new movies coming out to the theaters.

I noticed it the other day when I went to update the bar to the right and still can't believe that our only choices this week include Vin Diesel ("Babylon A.D.), a bad "American Pie" knock-off ("College"), and the next installment from the "Scary Movie" folks ("Disaster Movie"). That's it?!

And don't get me started on "College" as the name of a movie. That's just taking laziness to a whole new level. Why stop there? Why not just call it "Movie"??

Worst.

Maybe I've just been spoiled from one hit after another this summer (we've talked ad nauseum about how much better movies have been this season compared to the last year) but still, this is just a little ridiculous.

I know it's Labor Day weekend, and I'm guessing that this weekend is historically bad for new releases but are you seriously telling me that the new "X-Files" movie would have done any worse opening up now than it did the weekend after "The Dark Night" came out (Mulder and Scully got absolutely trounced by the Batman with a paltry $10 million opening; and after a month in the theaters, it is just now about to make up it's production costs of $30 mil - and that's with the foreign gross added in!)

I'm sure that there are a lot of people a lot smarter than me that get paid a lot more than I ever will to make these decisions that are probably a lot more difficult than I will ever realize, but sometimes it just doesn't seem that hard (that's what she said!).

Like I said, it's been a great summer of movies and it's a shame to see the last week go out with such a whimper. With September and October fast approaching, we'll start getting bombarded by "Oscar" films and performances, but I will always remember the summer of 2008 as one of the best movie-going seasons of my life.

If you're like me and try to see a new movie every week, you might be in trouble. Fortunately, I've yet to see "Tropic Thunder" so that might serve as this week's replacement. If you are all caught up, however, I would recommend seeing "The Dark Night" again or even (I can't believe I'm saying this) Anna Farris in "The House Bunny" before I'd go to any of these three.

All I can say is thank the Dear Lord that college football starts this week and the pros get going next, because it would appear that the 2008 summer movie season is officially over.
